South Korea celebrates 73rd Coast Guard Day in Incheon

South Korea marked the 73rd Coast Guard Day with ceremonies held in Incheon to honor maritime safety and sovereignty. The Korea Coast Guard held a commemorative event in Songdo, where the widow of the late Superintendent Son Jin-geuk donated his personal belongings to the agency’s special archives. Son died in 1976 after successfully evacuating dozens of vessels and crew members during severe weather near Deokjeok Island.

In conjunction with the anniversary, Incheon Metropolitan City held an award ceremony to recognize eight exemplary coast guard officers. These individuals were honored for their contributions to maritime rescue, crackdowns on illegal fishing, and maintaining maritime order in border waters. The city emphasized the growing importance of maritime safety management following recent changes to nighttime navigation permissions in the West Sea.
