South Korea clarifies stance on Alaska LNG project investment

South Korean officials have clarified to Alaska lawmakers that any investment in the Alaska Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) project will only occur after the project's lead developer, the Glenfarne Group, reaches a final investment decision and commercial viability is proven.

This clarification follows a unilateral announcement by U.S. President Donald Trump, who stated that over $50 billion of South Korea's $250 billion investment in the U.S. would be directed toward the Alaska LNG project. However, local reports indicate significant economic hurdles remain. The project faces high costs, potentially double those of LNG produced in the Gulf of Mexico and more expensive than projects in British Columbia, Canada.

Alaska State Senator Bill Wielechowski noted that South Korean authorities emphasized they would review the project's commercial reasonableness only after a final decision is made, making it clear that no investment commitment has been finalized at this stage.
