South Korea clinches 2‑1 win over Czech Republic as O Hyeong‑gyu scores decisive goal despite illness

On 12 June, South Korea defeated the Czech Republic 2‑1 in the opening match of the World Cup qualification Group A. Forward O Hyeong‑gyu, who had been suffering from severe diarrhea and a 38 °C fever that morning, entered the game as a substitute and scored the winning goal.

Medical team leader Pe Jong‑guk said the player “could barely get out of bed” early that day, while team doctor Song Jun‑seop noted that “the specific treatment is our secret weapon,” allowing the striker to recover enough to play. After the match, O Hyeong‑gyu thanked the staff, saying the medical support made his participation possible.

Czech coach Miloš Kovaček expressed disappointment, describing the loss as “something that should not have happened” and acknowledging that South Korea had the better overall play. The Czech side will face South Africa in their next group match.
