South Korea coach Hong Myung‑bo resigns after World Cup exit

South Korea’s national football team failed to advance from Group A of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, finishing with three points after a win over the Czech Republic and defeats to Mexico and South Africa. The poor performance prompted President Lee Jae‑myung to demand a full investigation into the use of taxpayer funds and the management of the sport.

One day after the tournament exit, the team's federation head, former defender Hong Myung‑bo, announced his resignation, saying he would accept full responsibility for the result. Hong, who coached the side since 2024 and played in four World Cups, acknowledged the decision was difficult but necessary.

President Lee called on the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism to conduct a thorough review and to implement reforms to prevent a repeat of the situation.
