South Korea coach Hong Myung‑bo resigns after World Cup exit, president orders probe

South Korea’s men’s national football team failed to progress from the group stage of the 2026 World Cup, losing 1‑0 to South Africa and finishing third in its group. The result left the squad outside the eight best third‑placed teams, ending its tournament.

President Lee Jae Myung publicly criticised the coach, calling him “incompetent” and saying, “When loyalty and factionalism are valued over competence, the result is practically inevitable.” He ordered the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism to conduct a thorough investigation into the team’s elimination, the appointment of Hong Myung‑bo, and the use of public funds.

Facing mounting pressure and threats, Hong Myung‑bo announced his resignation, apologising to the Korean public: “I deeply apologize to the Korean public who supported our team. Today, I am stepping down.” The resignation follows calls for reforms to South Korean sport administration.
