South Korea reviews expanding Cheonghae Unit mission to Gulf of Oman

South Korea is reviewing a plan to expand the operational scope of its Cheonghae anti-piracy unit to include the Gulf of Oman. The Ministry of National Defense is preparing a motion for parliament to extend the unit's mission, which is currently set to expire at the end of the year.

The potential expansion comes amid a sharp increase in pirate activity in the Gulf of Aden and worsening security conditions in the region. To bolster maritime surveillance and reconnaissance, the government is considering deploying additional assets, such as a P-8A Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft.

While some observers suggest the move may be linked to international pressure regarding the Strait of Hormuz, the Ministry of National Defense stated the review is focused on strengthening existing missions and responding to local security trends. The current unit consists of approximately 320 personnel, a 4,400-ton-class destroyer, a maritime operations helicopter, and several high-speed boats.
