South Korea considers expanding Cheonghae Unit operations to Gulf of Oman
The South Korean government is considering expanding the operational area of the Cheonghae Unit to include the Gulf of Oman, near the Strait of Hormuz. This move involves potentially deploying additional assets, such as P-8A maritime patrol aircraft, large logistics support ships like the Soyang, and explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) capabilities.
The proposal has sparked controversy, with critics and some political groups labeling it a ‘bypass deployment’ intended to meet United States' demands for increased security contributions in the Hormuz region without a formal new deployment. Opponents express concerns regarding the safety of South Korean personnel, noting recent Iranian attacks on civilian vessels in the area and questioning whether the current unit's scale is sufficient to defend against drone and missile threats.
The government has maintained that it will not engage in war or combat, stating its primary focus is protecting South Korean citizens and economic interests. A formal motion to extend the Cheonghae Unit's deployment is expected to be submitted to the National Assembly soon.
