South Korea weighs military role in Strait of Hormuz amid Iran tensions
Tensions have escalated in the Strait of Hormuz following reports that the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps targeted a US unmanned vessel. On September 5, 2026, Iranian forces reportedly launched attacks against three tankers and three US-linked vessels in retaliation for previous raids on Iranian tankers.
In response to US pressure to ensure freedom of navigation, the South Korean government is reviewing military contributions to the region. Options under consideration include the deployment of P-8A Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft, EOD teams, and naval support ships. While South Korean officials state that no final decision has been made, the government is evaluating various non-combat and combat roles.
Iran has issued direct warnings regarding South Korea's potential involvement. Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Esmail Baghaei issued a statement in Korean, warning that military participation in the Strait of Hormuz would be viewed as direct support for aggression and could lead to serious consequences. Additionally, academic experts have warned that South Korean assets in the Middle East could become targets if the country is perceived as an enemy in a conflict with Iran.
