South Korea narrows Justice Minister candidates to Park Kyun-taek and Yang Bu-nam

President Lee Jae-myung has narrowed the selection for the South Korean Justice Minister to two candidates: lawmakers Park Kyun-taek and Yang Bu-nam. The position has been vacant for approximately 60 days following the departure of former Minister Jung Sung-ho and the subsequent withdrawal of Kim Seung-won due to allegations regarding clinical trial approval solicitations.

Both candidates are former high-ranking prosecutors and are considered part of the pro-Lee Jae-myung faction. Park Kyun-taek previously served as the Gwangju High Prosecutors' Office chief and acted as a legal special advisor during Lee's tenure as Democratic Party leader. Yang Bu-nam served as the Busan High Prosecutors' Office chief and managed the party's legal response to Lee's judicial risks as legal committee chair.

The potential appointments have drawn sharp criticism from the People Power Party, which characterizes the move as an attempt to appoint “defenders” to manage the President's judicial risks. Opponents argue that selecting individuals who were personally involved in defending the President could compromise the political neutrality and fairness of the Ministry of Justice.
