South Korea inflation slows to 2.9% in September
South Korea’s annual consumer inflation slowed to 2.9% in September, down from 3.1% in August. This deceleration was driven by falling agricultural, livestock, and fisheries prices, which dropped 0.3% year-on-year due to government supply increases and holiday discounts.
However, upward pressure remained in other sectors. Petroleum products rose 14.8%, with diesel surging by 20%. Processed foods increased by 2.1%, and IT devices saw significant hikes, including computers at 27.4% and mobile phones at 8.3%.
The government estimated that its petroleum price cap policy prevented inflation from reaching 3.5%. While agricultural costs eased, livestock and seafood prices rose due to increased holiday demand and reduced supply. Officials noted that ongoing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East continue to pose risks to energy and commodity prices.
