South Korea defeats Czech Republic 2-1 in World Cup 2026 opener in Guadalajara

South Korea opened its 2026 World Cup campaign with a 2‑1 comeback win over the Czech Republic at the Akron Stadium in Guadalajara. After conceding a header from Ladislav Krejčí in the 59th minute, the Asian side equalised through In‑beom Hwang at 67' and secured the victory when Oh Hyeon‑gyu finished a cross from Hwang in the 80th minute. Hwang was highlighted as the Man of the Match, contributing a goal and an assist.

The result placed South Korea in second place in Group A behind tournament hosts Mexico, who lead the group on goal difference. The next group fixture pits South Korea against Mexico on 18 June at the same venue, a match the Korean camp is already gearing up for.

Coach Hong Myung‑bo emphasized preparation, stating, “Nos vamos a preparar de lo mejor para el partido contra México,” and earlier described Mexico as “una potencia” of football. The team has been training at Chivas’ Verde Valle complex, focusing on aerial work after the Czech goal, while also acclimatising at altitude in Salt Lake City ahead of the tournament.
