South Korea Democratic Party launches leadership primaries

The Democratic Party of South Korea began its pre‑primary process on July 21, lasting through July 23, to trim the field of candidates for party leader and top committee (최고위원). Five candidates – Kim Min‑seok, Ko Min‑jeong, Jeong Cheong‑rae, Kim Bo‑mi and Song Young‑gil – are contesting the leadership race. Votes will be weighted 35 % central committee members, 35 % party members and 30 % public opinion polls, with the field to be reduced from five to three candidates.

Fourteen aspirants are running for the party's top committee. An online vote, split evenly between central committee members and party members, will cut the slate from 14 to eight. The contest reflects a split between the pro‑Lee Jae‑myung (친명) and pro‑Jeong Cheong‑rae (친청) factions, with reports of coordinated “birthday voting” strategies. Television debates for the leadership candidates are scheduled for July 29, August 5 and August 12, while the top‑committee candidates will debate on August 3.
