South Korea deploys AI system to prevent wildlife roadkill

The Ministry of Climate, Energy and Environment has launched an AI-driven wildlife roadkill prevention system on National Route 17 in Cheongju, North Chungcheong Province. Starting May 28, the system uses AI to monitor CCTV footage for approaching wildlife.

When an animal is detected, the system triggers LED electronic displays and warning lights located 150 meters ahead of the driver. These displays provide real-time alerts, such as “Wildlife appearing 150m ahead,” to encourage drivers to reduce speed. This initiative follows successful pilot programs in Yangpyeong, Hoengseong, and Pyeongchang.

Roadkill incidents in South Korea have seen a significant rise, with reports increasing from approximately 15,000 in 2020 to nearly 120,000 in 2023. The Cheongju section of Route 17 was specifically selected due to its high frequency of reported incidents, ranking eighth nationally. The National Institute of Ecology will analyze the system's effectiveness, with results expected next year. The Ministry plans to install the system in another high-risk area by next year.
