South Korea develops AI agents to assist teacher curriculum planning

The Korea Institute for Curriculum and Evaluation (KICE) is developing an ‘AI agent’ designed to assist teachers in designing and organizing curricula for elementary, middle, and high schools. The primary goal is to reduce the repetitive administrative burden on educators, allowing them to focus more on tailoring educational content to the specific needs of students and their local school environments.

In addition to the AI agent development, KICE has established AI literacy education standards for students from first grade in elementary school through third year of middle school. These standards aim to provide a systematic blueprint for AI education, ensuring students can navigate the rapidly evolving landscape of generative AI and related technologies.

Amidst these technological shifts, educational experts emphasize the changing role of schools. As AI becomes capable of producing high-quality academic outputs, the focus of education is shifting from mere knowledge memorization to developing critical thinking, the ability to ask meaningful questions, and fostering human qualities such as empathy and ethical judgment.
