South Korea enters diplomatic disputes with Ukraine and the US
South Korea has entered a significant diplomatic dispute with Ukraine and the United States involving allegations of broken confidentiality and disputed economic commitments.
The tension with Ukraine arose after President Volodymyr Zelenskyy publicly revealed that two North Korean soldiers, captured in Russia's Kursk region, had been transferred to South Korea. South Korean President Lee Jae-myung claimed this disclosure violated a discrete agreement intended to protect the families of the prisoners from North Korean retaliation. Seoul has requested a public apology from Kyiv, while Ukrainian officials have characterized the situation as a ‘diplomatic misunderstanding,’ denying that any non-disclosure agreement existed.
Simultaneously, South Korea has denied claims made by U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick regarding a massive energy investment. Lutnick suggested South Korea would commit $54 billion to a 1,300-kilometer gas pipeline project in Alaska. South Korean Industry Minister Kim Gyu-kwan clarified that no such commitment has been made, stating that any potential participation would only be considered after a thorough economic feasibility study.
