South Korea establishes Defense Drone Headquarters

South Korea has officially launched the Defense Drone Headquarters, marking the dissolution of the Drone Operations Command after approximately three years of operation. The restructuring follows criticisms regarding operational inefficiencies and mission overlap between the command and individual military branches.

Under the new organization, operational duties previously held by the Drone Operations Command will be transferred to the Army, Air Force, and Marine Corps, with the Joint Chiefs of Staff managing integrated command and control. The Defense Drone Headquarters will focus on policy, research, and development, including drone and anti-drone combat concept evolution, requirement planning, and civil-military cooperation.

The reorganization follows a recommendation from a joint public-private-military advisory committee. The new headquarters will be smaller than its predecessor, reducing personnel from approximately 280 to 100, but will feature a higher concentration of senior officers to enhance specialized expertise.
