South Korea evaluates historic Taegeukgi for National Treasure status

The Korea Heritage Service has launched an investigation to potentially upgrade three historic Taegeukgi (Korean national flags) from Treasure status to National Treasure status. The artifacts under review include the Denny Taegeukgi, the Jingwansa Temple Taegeukgi, and the Kim Gu Signed Taegeukgi. These items hold significant historical value, representing the early history of the national flag, anti-Japanese resistance, and appeals for support for the Liberation Army.

Due to the artifacts being currently on display at various institutions, the full on-site inspections are expected to continue into next year. The final decision on their designation will follow a comprehensive review process including field surveys and committee deliberations.

Separately, Professor Seo Kyoung-duk of Sungshin Women's University has raised concerns regarding a surge of online content on social media platforms like Threads and TikTok that mocks and disparages prominent Korean independence activists. Seo criticized the posts for distorting historical facts and urged users to report such malicious content while calling on platform operators to strengthen monitoring to protect national pride and historical integrity.
