South Korea expands free influenza vaccination eligibility

South Korea is expanding its national influenza vaccination program, increasing the age limit for free shots to include children and adolescents up to age 14 (those born between January 1, 2012, and August 31, 2026). The vaccination rollout begins on September 21, prioritizing pregnant women and children requiring two doses. Those requiring only a single dose, including the newly eligible middle school second-graders, can begin vaccinations on September 28.

For seniors, the schedule begins on October 12 for those aged 75 and older, followed by the 70–74 age group on October 15, and the 65–69 age group on October 19. Health authorities recommend that seniors receive both influenza and COVID-19 vaccinations at the same time, though they should be administered in different arms.

In Cheongsong County, local government support extends even further, providing free vaccinations for middle school third-graders and high school students who fall outside the national coverage. This local initiative aims to bolster regional immunity among adolescents. The influenza advisory was issued earlier than usual this year, as hospitalizations and infection rates have already shown significant increases compared to the previous season.
