South Korea expands medical support for self-catheterization

South Korea's Ministry of Health and Welfare has announced a significant expansion of medical expense support for self-catheters used by patients with neurogenic bladder. Effective December 1, the revised support standards aim to alleviate the financial burden on approximately 10,000 patients who require intermittent self-catheterization to prevent complications like kidney damage and urinary tract infections.

For adults aged 19 and older, the daily support limit will increase to a maximum of six catheters at a standard rate of 13,500 KRW. For children and adolescents under 19, the support will increase to a maximum of eight catheters per day at a standard rate of 18,000 KRW. This change is expected to reduce annual medical expenses for individual patients by approximately 1.55 million KRW.

Medical professionals and patient advocacy groups, including the Korea Spinal Cord Injury Association, have welcomed the decision. They noted that the increased support allows patients to maintain proper hydration and social activities without the fear of excessive costs. However, experts emphasized the need for further institutional support, including hygiene education, counseling, and integrated management for related bowel disorders.
