South Korea expands renewable energy via floating solar projects
South Korea is expanding its renewable energy capacity through floating solar power projects, such as the Hapcheon Dam Floating Solar Power Project in Gyeongsangnam-do province. Built by the company Scotra, the installation utilizes approximately 92,000 photovoltaic panels mounted on floating structures that allow the modules to move with natural water level fluctuations.
The project has an installed capacity of nearly 41 megawatts (MW) and has been in commercial operation since December 2021. By utilizing reservoir surfaces, the country aims to increase renewable energy generation without requiring large amounts of land for new solar parks.
