Jeonnam-Gwangju accelerates RE100 infrastructure for semiconductor industry

The Jeonnam-Gwangju integrated special city is accelerating the establishment of a renewable energy supply chain to support massive investments in the semiconductor, AI, and data center sectors. With semiconductor industry investments in the region estimated at 896 trillion won, officials highlighted the need to meet a projected power demand of approximately 6.3GW for the Southwest Semiconductor Cluster.

To achieve RE100 industrial status, the region has announced a four-point strategy: establishing a stable renewable energy supply system, creating a full-lifecycle governance model, expanding local production and consumption (jisanjiso) infrastructure, and developing successful RE100 models through cooperation between leading companies and public institutions. Key initiatives include the development of the Solasido future city, which integrates 5.4GW of renewable energy and energy storage systems (ESS).

Furthermore, a regulatory innovation agreement was signed between the Ministry of Climate, Energy and Environment, Jeonnam-Gwangju, and nine local counties, including Haenam and Yeongam. This agreement aims to ease regulations such as solar power separation distances and streamline development permits to facilitate renewable energy expansion. Additionally, a 4.5GW solar power project led by local farmers and fishermen is being developed to provide power to high-tech industries while ensuring profit-sharing with local residents.
