South Korea faces Coast Guard drone limits and FSS inspection delays
The South Korean Coast Guard is facing criticism over the limitations of its drone fleet. While the number of drones increased from 38 in 2021 to 61 by August this year, all current models are small-scale aircraft weighing under 25kg. These drones have limited mission radii of approximately 20km and flight times of only 60 to 90 minutes, making them ineffective for wide-area maritime surveillance or long-term search and rescue operations.
Furthermore, the drones cannot operate in adverse weather conditions, such as high winds exceeding 10m/s or precipitation. During a recent maritime towing accident in Busan, the Coast Guard was unable to deploy any drones due to a heavy sea warning. Representative Moon Geum-ju has urged the procurement of medium-sized unmanned aerial vehicles with mission radii exceeding 150km and flight times over 10 hours to improve emergency response capabilities.
Separately, the Financial Supervisory Service (FSS) is under scrutiny as the average processing time for financial company inspections has risen significantly. In the first half of 2024, the average inspection period was 237 days, compared to approximately 110 days in 2021. This delay has led to a surge in reports of inspections exceeding standard timeframes and an increase in applications from financial institutions and employees seeking protection of their rights and interests.
