South Korea faces dilemma over Ukraine's air defense request
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has requested air defense systems from South Korea to bolster Ukraine's defenses. Zelensky noted that Ukraine is currently lacking these systems and offered to exchange drone technology and other cooperation in return.
Experts suggest that fulfilling this request could place South Korea in a difficult position, potentially straining relations with Russia and impacting Seoul's own national defense capabilities. The request comes amid reports that approximately 50,000 North Korean soldiers may be deployed to support Russia.
South Korean officials have maintained that any provision of defense equipment must comply with domestic laws and policies regarding weapon transfers to active conflict zones. While Seoul has provided aid in sectors such as energy, infrastructure, health, and education, the government continues to monitor the evolving relationship between North Korea and Russia.
