South Korea faces potential Olympic medal loss amid referee bribery allegations

South Korean media reports have surfaced alleging long-standing referee bribery involving the Korea Football Association (KFA). Veterans in the sports industry claim that bribery, involving both cash and sexual favors, has been a practice since the mid-1980s to secure advantages in international competitions.

Specific allegations suggest that bribery may have occurred during the 2002 World Cup, including matches against Poland, Italy, and Spain. Furthermore, investigations from 2016 by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism indicated that the KFA bribed ten referees and match officials through entertainment and prostitution services during the 2011-2012 period.

These revelations have placed South Korea’s 2012 London Olympic men’s football bronze medal at risk. Because three of the seven matches identified in the bribery scandal were part of the 2012 Olympic qualifiers, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) may review the results. While FIFA has specific ethical time limits, the IOC maintains separate disciplinary procedures that could lead to the stripping of medals if fraud is confirmed.
