South Korea food authorities penalize 15 black goat extract manufacturers for mislabeling
The Ministry of Food and Drug Safety has identified 15 manufacturers of black goat extract products for violating food safety and labeling laws. The crackdown revealed that many companies significantly inflated the reported content of black goat in their products. In one notable case in Geochang, a company advertised an 81% black goat extract, but the actual black goat content was only 1%, with the remainder being purified water.
In total, 58,183 violating products were identified, with an estimated sales value of approximately 3.63 billion KRW. Among the 15 manufacturers, 12 were found to have exaggerated the black goat content. Other violations included falsifying ingredient usage records, failing to conduct mandatory self-quality inspections, and using false or exaggerated online advertisements that claimed products could prevent diseases like diabetes.
In addition to the extract manufacturers, a broader inspection of 2,886 food establishments specializing in summer health foods, such as samgyetang (ginseng chicken soup), led to the discovery of 51 businesses violating hygiene and facility standards. The Ministry has requested administrative actions from local governments and referred the cases to investigative authorities.
