South Korea’s World Cup exit sparks protests, audits and police security

South Korea’s men’s football team failed to advance beyond the group stage of the 2026 World Cup, finishing third in Group A with one win and two losses. The disappointing result led to coach Hong Myung‑bo’s resignation after President Yoon Sae‑keun publicly criticised the appointment, and spurred calls for a special audit of the Korea Football Association (KFA).

Fans voiced anger at Incheon International Airport, chanting “Hong Myung‑bo, pay back the money and leave” and demanding accountability. Threats against the former coach prompted the police to deploy about 160 riot and airport officers to safeguard the team’s return. South Korean captain Son Heung‑min posted an apology on Instagram, saying he was “indescribably hurt” by the exit, but was later welcomed by supporters who shouted “Don’t hang your head” and “Thank you for your hard work.”

Celebrities, including actors and singers, sent messages of encouragement to Son and the squad. The government announced it will audit the KFA to determine why the team performed poorly and to review the coach‑appointment process, which had previously been judged irregular by the Seoul Administrative Court.
