Yoon Suk-yeol convicted, suspended 18‑month term could cost People Power Party 397 billion won

A Seoul district court sentenced former President Yoon Suk‑yeol to 18 months imprisonment, suspended for three years, after finding him guilty of violating South Korea's public election law by publishing false statements during his 2022 presidential campaign. The court ruled that Yoon had introduced a lawyer to a former tax official and had met shaman Jeon Seong‑bae, contrary to his denials, and said the false statements could significantly affect voters’ judgment.

If the conviction is upheld and Yoon receives a fine exceeding 1 million won, the People Power Party must return approximately 397 billion won (about $27 million) in state‑reimbursed campaign expenses to the National Election Commission. Yoon’s legal team said they will appeal the verdict.
