Yoon Suk-yeol convicted, suspended sentence may cost PPP 397 bn won
A Seoul Central District Court found former president Yoon Suk-yeol guilty of violating South Korea's public election law by making false statements during his 2022 presidential campaign. He was sentenced to 18 months imprisonment, suspended for three years. The court said his false statements could have misled voters and affected the fairness of the election.
If the conviction is upheld on appeal, the ruling could require Yoon's People Power Party (PPP) to return roughly 397 billion won (about $27‑$29 million) of campaign expenses that were reimbursed by the National Election Commission. Yoon denied the allegations and announced he will appeal the verdict. The case adds to a series of criminal proceedings against him, including a life‑sentence for an insurrection linked to his brief declaration of martial law in December 2024.
