South Korea and France strengthen strategic ties through defense and AI pacts
During a state visit to Paris, South Korean President Lee Jae-myung and French President Emmanuel Macron met to strengthen bilateral ties on the 140th anniversary of their diplomatic relations. The summit resulted in numerous agreements spanning defense, high-tech industries, and economic cooperation.
In the technology sector, Samsung Electronics entered a strategic partnership with French AI firm Mistral AI to co-develop AI models specialized for semiconductor design and manufacturing. Samsung also participated in a major investment round for Mistral AI. Other areas of cooperation include quantum technology, space, nuclear energy, and biotechnology.
On defense and security, the two nations agreed to upgrade their military secret information protection agreement and pursue a mutual military logistics support agreement. Discussions also touched upon maritime security and freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, though South Korean officials clarified that talks did not involve decisions on troop deployment.
Economically, the leaders set a target to increase bilateral trade to $20 billion by 2030. The visit also included a business roundtable featuring major corporations from both nations to explore opportunities in mobility, energy, and bio-health sectors.
