On 31 July 2026 the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) recorded a temperature of 41.4 °C in the southeastern city of Yangsan, breaking the previous national record of 41.0 °C set in Hongcheon in August 2018. The heatwave intensified, and on 2 August 2026 Yangsan reached 42.5 °C, establishing a new all‑time high for the country. Temperatures above 40 °C persisted in Yangsan for at least three consecutive days and later for five days, a rare occurrence since modern records began in 1973. The KMA issued its highest‑level heat‑wave warning for parts of South Gyeongsang Province, including Yangsan, and maintained heat‑wave advisories across most of South Korea. The extreme heat was attributed to the simultaneous influence of the North Pacific High and the Tibetan High pressure systems, which trapped heat over the Korean Peninsula. The heatwave caused at least 12 heat‑related deaths nationwide and prompted the Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasure Headquarters (중대본) to be elevated to level 2, mobilising additional emergency resources. Forecasters also monitored Typhoon Dolphin, whose track could affect the region in the coming week.
