South Korea inspects 141 passenger ferries ahead of Chuseok holiday

South Korea's Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries has launched a 12-day special safety inspection of 141 coastal passenger ferries ahead of the Chuseok holiday. The inspection, running from August 31 to September 11, aims to ensure maritime safety as passenger numbers are expected to rise.

The Korea Maritime Transportation Safety Authority predicts that daily ferry users will average approximately 77,000 people during the holiday period, a 2.8% increase compared to average years. To manage this influx of travelers and tourists, a joint inspection team comprising the Korea Coast Guard, local governments, and public safety supervisors will conduct thorough checks.

The inspection covers critical areas including hull integrity, engines, life-saving equipment, and the management of passenger boarding and disembarking zones. Officials will also verify the presence of safety managers, the condition of passenger amenities, and adherence to safety protocols by crew members, particularly in vehicle loading areas. Minor defects will be corrected immediately, while more significant issues must be resolved by September 23, prior to the start of the special Chuseok transportation measures.
