South Korea issues influenza epidemic alert amid rising COVID-19 cases

The Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA) has issued an influenza epidemic alert, noting that the current surge is occurring significantly earlier than in previous years. The alert was triggered as influenza outpatient suspected cases reached 25.3 per 1,000 people, approximately double the seasonal threshold and nearly four times the level recorded during the same period last year.

Health authorities are expressing concern over a potential ‘twindemic’ as COVID-19 hospitalizations are also on the rise. While COVID-19 numbers remain lower than last year, the simultaneous increase in both respiratory viruses has prompted calls for vigilance. The spread is particularly pronounced among school-aged children (7–12 years) and infants, coinciding with the start of the new school semester.

Medical experts, including Professor Park Wan-beom of Seoul National University Hospital, emphasize the importance of distinguishing between the common cold, COVID-19, and influenza. Influenza is characterized by sudden high fever, chills, and muscle aches. High-risk groups, such as the elderly, pregnant women, and those with underlying conditions, are urged to seek early treatment to prevent complications like pneumonia.

National influenza vaccinations are scheduled to begin on September 21, with priority given to children, pregnant women, and the elderly. Authorities are also monitoring the supply of vaccines and antiviral treatments to ensure adequate availability during the peak season.
