South Korea July exports surge on AI chip demand

South Korea’s exports jumped 62.8% year‑on‑year in July to $98.89 billion, outpacing the median Reuters forecast of a 59% rise. The surge was driven by a boom in AI‑related semiconductor demand, with semiconductor exports soaring roughly 179% and computer sales climbing 404%. Leading chipmakers Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix accounted for much of the growth, while exports to China rose 96% and to the United States 69%. Imports increased 26.5% to $68.56 billion, keeping the trade surplus at $30.32 billion for the month. The strong export performance came amid volatile equity markets, with the KOSPI index having fallen more than 30% earlier in the month on AI‑related concerns before rebounding on the semiconductor rally.
