South Korea launches 10 million Climate Citizen Movement

South Korea’s Ministry of Climate, Energy and Environment has launched the ‘10 Million Climate Citizen Movement’ to encourage individual participation in combating the climate crisis. As part of this initiative, an integrated ‘Republic of Korea Climate Action’ website is scheduled to open on September 10.

Participants can declare themselves ‘Climate Citizens’ by committing to ten specific actions, such as reducing plastic use, utilizing public transportation, and using renewable energy. Upon making a declaration, citizens will receive an online ‘Climate Citizen ID’ and can track their greenhouse gas reduction achievements.

To incentivize participation, the government is offering rewards through the Carbon Neutrality Point system. Citizens who declare themselves climate citizens by the end of the year will receive 1,000 points, with an additional 1,000 points available for verifying a first climate action. These points can be used like cash or donated, with annual limits reaching up to 70,000 won. The ministry aims to expand this movement to 10 million citizens by next year to foster a culture of sustainable living.
