South Korea launches AI-based authentication for K-brands

South Korea has introduced a national certification trademark system to combat the rising global circulation of counterfeit K-brand products, such as food and cosmetics. Developed by the Korea Minting and Security Printing Corporation and the Korean Intellectual Property Office, the system utilizes AI-generated digital watermarks embedded within authentication marks.

Consumers can verify product authenticity by scanning a QR code with a smartphone. The system supports 15 languages, including English, Chinese, and Japanese, providing immediate feedback on whether a product is genuine or suspected to be counterfeit. This process does not require the installation of additional applications.

Thirty-one companies, including Samyang Foods and Amorepacific, have already applied for the system. Beyond consumer verification, the government intends to use the authentication data to track the distribution of counterfeit goods and share information with international law enforcement agencies to curb illegal trade.
