South Korea launches AI services for fishery safety and administration

South Korea’s Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries has launched three new digital services utilizing artificial intelligence and public data to improve safety and administrative efficiency for the fishing industry.

The first service is an active safety management system that analyzes historical accident statistics and real-time weather data to provide customized accident prevention alerts to crew members via messaging services. It also provides safety inspectors with information on high-risk vessels, while the ‘Fishing Information Alerter’ app allows the public and recreational fishers to check sea area risks.

The second service, ‘Cheok-cheok Gamcheok,’ is a simulation tool for fishermen considering the vessel reduction program. By entering data such as vessel age, tonnage, and catch volume, users can estimate potential business closure subsidies based on current regulations.

The third service, ‘Fishery Healthcare Alerter,’ assists aquaculture farmers with the correct use of aquatic medicines. Using photo, voice, or simple search functions, the tool provides dosage instructions, calculates expected shipment dates, and offers location-based information regarding water temperature and nearby veterinary institutions.
