South Korea faces rising influenza and COVID-19 cases
South Korea is facing a potential ‘twindemics’ scenario as influenza and COVID-19 cases rise simultaneously. The Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA) has issued an influenza advisory, noting that influenza-like illness rates have significantly exceeded seasonal thresholds, particularly among children and adolescents.
To combat the spread, the national free vaccination program for the 2026-2027 season is set to begin on September 21, targeting children and pregnant women. The eligibility for free pediatric vaccinations has been expanded to include 14-year-olds. Seniors aged 65 and older can receive both influenza and COVID-19 vaccinations starting October 12.
Parallel to the vaccination rollout, concerns have been raised regarding national medical preparedness. Data from lawmaker Seo Mi-hwa reveals that the national stockpile of antiviral drugs has fallen short of the target goal for two consecutive years. Current holdings are approximately 3.5 million doses below the target of covering 25% of the population. Despite plans for new purchases, the shortage is expected to persist due to the expiration of existing stocks.
