South Korea unveils 20 trillion‑won sovereign fund for AI and data‑center expansion

The South Korean government announced the creation of a new strategic investment account under the Korea Investment Corporation (KIC) with an initial capital of at least 20 trillion won (about US$14 billion). The fund, described as a sovereign wealth vehicle, will provide long‑term "patient capital" for AI, data‑center, semiconductor, robotics, defence, space and other strategic industries, investing both domestically and abroad. It will operate within KIC rather than as a separate entity and will take over holdings from existing policy funds to avoid financing gaps for key companies.

President Lee Jae‑Myung outlined a broader AI investment plan that includes a joint 800 000 billion‑won (≈US$518 billion) chip complex near Gwanju, with Samsung and SK Hynix committing to build ten additional semiconductor fabs by 2045. In parallel, a public‑private AIDC Alliance of 12 leading Korean tech, power and cooling firms was launched to construct 18.4 GW of AI data‑center capacity and promote the export of AI‑generated "intelligence tokens". Funding for the data‑center megaproject will draw from the 150 trillion‑won National Growth Fund.

Legislative changes to the KIC law are expected next month, with the sovereign fund slated to begin operations in 2027.
