South Korea launches state-led compensation for humidifier disinfectant victims
South Korea has launched a state-led compensation system for victims of the humidifier disinfectant disaster, allowing individuals to receive damages through a review committee without the need for individual lawsuits. This transition follows the amendment of the ‘Special Act on Humidifier Disinfectant Damage Relief’.
The Ministry of Climate, Energy and Environment has signed a compensation implementation agreement with 15 companies, including Oxy Reckitt Benckiser, SK Chemicals, SK Innovation, and Aekyung Industrial. Under this agreement, companies will contribute funds for compensation, while the government will secure budget allocations for contributions.
Victims can apply for compensation from September 8 until April 7 of next year. The compensation covers medical expenses, nursing care, disability, bereavement, funeral costs, and alimony. To prevent financial gaps, existing relief benefits will continue until compensation is paid. The government and participating companies also pledged to collaborate on building a chemical safety network covering the entire lifecycle of products, from raw materials to disposal.
