South Korea leads in robot density but lags in industrial data use

South Korea holds the world's highest manufacturing robot density with 1,220 robots per 10,000 employees, according to the International Federation of Robotics. However, the country lags in data utilization and AI investment.

Reports indicate that only 34% of South Korean manufacturing companies use collected data for decision-making, compared to a global average of 43%. Furthermore, investment in AI and machine learning stands at 28%, significantly lower than the global average of 50%. Experts note a shortage of “behavior-result data,” which tracks how equipment operates under specific conditions to improve quality and productivity.

To address this, the South Korean government has introduced a “Physical AI Core Competitiveness Strategy.” This initiative aims to integrate fragmented data across departments and establish standards for data quality and interoperability.

Private sector companies are already implementing solutions. Hyundai Motor Group has deployed predictive maintenance AI across 1,400 industrial robots in six plants, while companies like MakinaRocks are applying AI operating systems to sectors such as automotive, semiconductors, and defense.
