South Korea mandates real-time GPS tracking for private ambulances

South Korea's Ministry of Health and Welfare has implemented a new regulation requiring private ambulance operators to transmit real-time GPS-based driving information. This measure, effective as of October 14, aims to prevent the misuse of ambulances for private purposes, often referred to as ‘fake ambulances.’

Under the new rules, operators such as the Korea Life Saving Corps must send data regarding vehicle locations, travel routes, and operating times to the Ambulance Record Management System (AiR) operated by the Central Emergency Medical Center. This replaces the previous method of manually cross-referencing GPS logs with paperwork after the fact, which was often insufficient for detecting violations.

The government plans to expand this system by 2027, introducing an automated feature to detect and alert authorities to suspicious driving patterns. Additionally, the Ministry is working to link the management system with insurance databases to ensure all ambulances maintain mandatory liability and comprehensive insurance coverage in real time.
