South Korea Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries releases maritime debris accident maps
The South Korean Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries has produced and distributed maritime debris accident maps to prevent incidents where floating objects, such as ropes or discarded nets, become entangled in ship propellers. These accidents occur at an average of 427 cases per year, making them the second most frequent type of engine-related incident after general engine damage.
Such entanglements can lead to vessel shutdowns, drifting, collisions, groundings, or even capsizing during bad weather. To mitigate these risks, the Ministry provides maps that highlight high-risk areas across six major maritime zones: Incheon-Pyeongtaek, Daesan-Gunsan, Mokpo-Yeosu, Busan-Yeosu, Ulsan-East Sea, and Jeju.
In addition to distributing 2,000 physical copies to fishing and passenger vessel operators, the Ministry has integrated accident data into the ‘Bada Navi’ mobile app and GPS navigation equipment. Information is also accessible via the Korea Maritime Transportation Safety Authority’s Maritime Safety Information System website.
