Opposition leader Jeong Jeom-sik slams govt for abandoning supplementary investigation authority

On June 26, People Power Party (PPP) parliamentary leader Jeong Jeom-sik denounced the South Korean government for refusing to submit a bill that would abolish the supplementary investigation authority. He said the decision “abandons responsibility for the nation” and is aimed at securing victory in the Democratic Party’s upcoming internal power struggle, calling it a trade‑off for the party’s “Myeong‑Cheong” (Lee Jae‑myung and Chung‑Rae) contest.

Jeong also criticised the Democratic Party’s pressure to retain control of the Law and Judiciary Committee chair, arguing that the party’s insistence is linked to a special prosecutor investigation into former President Lee Jae‑myung. He demanded the committee chairmanship be returned to the PPP and called for the resignation of prime‑minister‑designate Han Seong‑suk over a data‑leak scandal affecting youth entrepreneurs.

PPP secretary‑general Jeong Hee‑yong echoed these concerns, stating that the Democratic Party’s fixation on the committee chair is intended to block scrutiny of the “public‑office‑dismissal special investigation.”
