South Korea plans $6.75 million medical aid shipment to North Korea

South Korea is planning to send 1,431 medical items to North Korea as part of a humanitarian assistance program. The proposed shipment, valued at approximately $6.75 million, includes equipment for diagnosis, surgery, and general treatment, such as X-ray machines, stethoscopes, blood pressure monitors, automated external defibrillators, and operating tables.

The South Korean Unification Ministry has compiled the list across 166 categories intended for a hospital in Pyongyang. While the ministry has obtained a sanctions exemption from the United Nations Security Council committee in May, the actual implementation of the aid depends on whether Pyongyang chooses to accept it. Communication channels between the two nations remain largely stalled due to deteriorating bilateral relations.

Some South Korean lawmakers have expressed concerns that the medical equipment could be diverted for biochemical weapons production or used to analyze military vulnerabilities. Unification Minister Chung Dong-young addressed these concerns in parliament, stating that humanitarian aid should be treated separately from North Korea's military policies and emphasizing the urgent need for medical assistance due to the poor state of North Korea's healthcare system.
