South Korea heatwave kills 21, declared national disaster
South Korea’s extreme heatwave in early August 2026 has caused a surge in heat‑related illnesses and deaths. Official data show more than 2,000 people have required medical treatment for heat‑related conditions, and the death toll has risen to at least 21, with most fatalities among the elderly.
The Korea Meteorological Administration issued the highest‑level heat‑wave alert for Seoul, forecasting temperatures up to 39 °C, close to the city’s record high. The Korea Baseball Organization cancelled ten scheduled games after spectators fainted in the heat. The government has provided temporary air‑conditioned housing for affected residents and activated climate‑insurance payouts in Gyeonggi Province. Health officials warned that people with chronic conditions, especially hypertension, should prioritise water intake and avoid salty soups.
Typhoon Dolphin, while not directly threatening the peninsula, has intensified easterly winds that have helped raise temperatures across the region.
