South Korea producer prices rise 0.2% in August
South Korea's producer price index rose by 0.2% in August, marking a rebound after a 0.4% decrease in July. According to data from the Bank of Korea, the index reached 129.64, representing a 7.9% increase compared to the same month last year.
The rise was primarily driven by a 3.8% increase in agricultural, forestry, and fishery products due to heatwave conditions. Specifically, agricultural products rose by 4.9%, with spinach prices surging by 51.9%, while livestock products increased by 2.8%.
Energy costs also contributed to the upward pressure, as industrial city gas prices jumped by 11.0%, leading to a 0.9% increase in the electricity, gas, water, and waste category. While manufactured goods remained stable, service prices were flat due to a 0.6% rise in food and accommodation services being offset by a 1.5% drop in financial and insurance services.
Looking ahead, officials expect continued upward pressure on producer prices. Recent spikes in international oil prices and increases in industrial city gas wholesale rates are cited as key factors that may sustain the rising trend.
