South Korea proposes expanded AI cooperation at G20

At the G20 Innovation Ministers Meeting held in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, South Korea proposed expanding international cooperation in artificial intelligence (AI) to bolster industrial competitiveness. Representing South Korea, Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy Kim Jung-kwan emphasized that technological advancement alone is insufficient; AI integration requires robust intellectual property frameworks, international standards, and resilient supply chains.

South Korea highlighted the importance of creating legal systems where AI innovation and intellectual property rights can coexist, specifically mentioning its experience with fair use principles and AI training guidelines. The delegation also advocated for industry-driven AI standards in sectors such as autonomous manufacturing, future vehicles, and robotics to ensure interoperability and reliability across borders.

Furthermore, South Korea presented its ‘Manufacturing AI Transformation (M.AX)’ initiative as a model for using AI to enhance production planning, demand forecasting, and supply chain management. The proposal suggests moving beyond simple supplier diversification toward building open, complementary global supply chains by connecting industrial capabilities through trusted international partnerships.
