South Korea proposes talks to formally end Korean War
South Korean President Lee Jae Myung has proposed formal negotiations with North Korea to officially end the Korean War. The conflict, which began in 1950, remains technically active as it concluded with an armistice in 1953 rather than a definitive peace treaty.
During a ceremony commemorating Liberation Day, Lee suggested the establishment of a ‘multi-layered security system’ to prevent escalations and tensions along the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ). He expressed hope for face-to-face meetings between the two nations to foster peaceful coexistence and mutual growth.
A central component of the proposal involves discussing practical methods to halt the advancement of North Korea’s nuclear capabilities. This initiative comes as Pyongyang continues to test ballistic missiles and asserts its status as an irreversible nuclear power, while also strengthening ties with Russia.
Lee’s dovish approach marks a shift from his predecessor, Yoon Suk Yeol. The proposal seeks to replace the current ‘unstable armistice system’ with a permanent peace agreement to stabilize the Korean Peninsula and Northeast Asia.
