South Korea proposes formal talks to end Korean War
South Korean President Lee Jae Myung has proposed formal negotiations with North Korea to officially end the Korean War. The proposal was delivered during a ceremony commemorating the 81st anniversary of Korea’s liberation from Japanese colonial rule.
Lee suggested replacing the current armistice system, which has remained in place since 1953, with a permanent peace treaty. To manage regional tensions, he proposed a “multi-layered security system” along the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ). The president also indicated that dialogue could serve as a forum to discuss practical measures for halting the advancement of North Korea’s nuclear capabilities.
As of August 16, 2026, North Korea has not officially responded to the proposal. This diplomatic move follows a period of heightened tension, including North Korean missile tests and annual joint military drills between the United States and South Korea. Lee’s administration has signaled a shift toward a more conciliatory approach compared to his predecessor, Yoon Suk Yeol.
