South Korea raises avian influenza alert to ‘serious’ level
South Korean authorities have raised the national avian influenza (AI) crisis alert level to ‘serious’ following the confirmation of highly pathogenic H5N1 avian influenza in wild bird droppings. This marks the second domestic case of the season, following a previous detection in Suncheon, Jeonnam.
The latest case was confirmed in the lower reaches of the Han River in Gimpo, Gyeonggi Province, after testing samples collected on November 19. Due to the high risk of virus transmission to poultry farms during the migratory bird season, Gyeonggi Province has designated a 10km radius around the detection site as a wild bird surveillance area.
Emergency measures include a total ban on free-range poultry farming across the province, shortened testing cycles for livestock, and mandatory precision testing before poultry shipment. Authorities are also deploying large-scale disinfection vehicles to clean roads and access points twice daily, utilizing laser equipment to deter birds, and plowing fields near poultry farms to reduce foraging opportunities for migratory birds.
