South Korea ramps up heat‑wave safety measures for port and construction workers

Amid record‑breaking heat, the Busan Port Authority has launched a heat‑wave safety campaign for its port operations and new‑terminal construction sites. More than 2,000 items such as ice water, electrolyte drinks, cooling sheets, and temperature‑monitoring devices have been distributed, along with emergency kits for rapid treatment of heat‑related illnesses. Workers wear stickers on helmets indicating exposure levels, and mandatory rest breaks are enforced – at least 20 minutes within two hours when the apparent temperature exceeds 33 °C, with additional hourly breaks as needed.

The Public Procurement Service (PPS) has conducted emergency safety inspections at 29 publicly funded construction sites, including the KINTEX exhibition hall project. Inspectors verified the availability of cold water, electrolyte supplies, cooling facilities, and proper rest areas. They also checked that emergency response plans and 119 reporting systems are in place, and confirmed that contract terms will be adjusted if work is halted due to extreme heat. Both agencies aim to prevent heat‑related illnesses and protect workers during the ongoing extreme summer temperatures.
