South Korea records surge in electric vehicle registrations, 23% of new cars

South Korea's vehicle registration data for the first half of the year show a modest overall increase of 0.6% to 26.676 million vehicles, while new registrations rose 1.4% to 857,000. Eco‑friendly vehicles led the growth, with a 13.1% rise to 3.953 million units. Electric vehicles alone accounted for 199,000 new registrations, representing 23% of all new cars, and hybrid, electric and hydrogen models together made up 494,000 registrations (57.6%).

Daegu posted the highest regional growth, with new registrations climbing 18.3% to 37,327, driven largely by electric‑vehicle demand. The city’s electric‑vehicle stock reached 49,756, up 16.8% from the previous year. Gyeongsangbuk‑do also saw strong EV growth, with its electric‑vehicle fleet rising to 56,080, a 24.4% increase.

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport highlighted that while overall vehicle numbers grew only slightly, the rapid expansion of eco‑cars is reshaping the market and will guide future policy and industry support.
